Teachers’ March Causes Major Traffic Disruptions Across Quintana Roo

On May 16, 2025, teachers in Quintana Roo marched to protest proposed ISSSTE reforms, causing significant traffic disruptions in cities like Cancún and Chetumal.

On May 16, 2025, educators across Quintana Roo took to the streets in a coordinated protest against proposed reforms to the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE). The demonstrations led to significant traffic disruptions in major cities, including Cancún and Chetumal, as teachers voiced their concerns over changes that could affect their pensions and retirement benefits.

The protests were organized in response to the federal government’s proposed modifications to the ISSSTE law, which educators argue would increase their contributions and extend the years of service required for retirement. Teachers carried banners with messages such as “We reject the ISSSTE Law 2025” and “We demand dialogue with the governor,” emphasizing their call for negotiations.

In Cancún, hundreds of teachers marched through the city center, causing road closures and traffic jams that left many commuters frustrated. Similar scenes unfolded in Chetumal, where educators gathered outside government buildings, demanding that their voices be heard.

The protests are part of a broader movement by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), which has been actively opposing the proposed ISSSTE reforms. The CNTE argues that the changes would disproportionately affect educators and other public sector workers, undermining their financial security.

Despite the disruptions, the protests remained peaceful, with teachers emphasizing their commitment to dialogue and negotiation. They have called on the federal and state governments to engage in meaningful discussions to address their concerns and find a mutually agreeable solution.

As the situation develops, educators have indicated that they are prepared to continue their demonstrations and even escalate their actions if necessary. They have announced plans to participate in a nationwide strike starting May 21, aligning with other public sector workers to amplify their demands.

The Quintana Roo government has acknowledged the protests and expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with educators. However, no formal negotiations have been scheduled at this time.
