Mexico Extends Invitation to Russian President Putin for Claudia Sheinbaum’s Inauguration

In a move underscoring its diplomatic ties with Russia, Mexico has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the inauguration of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum on October 1. This development was reported by the Russian newspaper Izvestia, citing information from the Mexican embassy in Russia.

According to a representative from the Mexican embassy, the invitation was extended to President Putin, who will decide whether to attend the ceremony in person or appoint a high-ranking official to represent him. This diplomatic gesture comes as part of Mexico’s broader outreach to countries and international organizations with which it maintains relations.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry confirmed to Reuters that invitations have been sent to all nations and international bodies with which Mexico has diplomatic relations, as is customary for such significant events. This approach highlights Mexico’s commitment to engaging with the international community.

However, the invitation to Putin is notable due to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) issuance of an arrest warrant against him in 2023. The ICC charged Putin with war crimes related to the illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country in February 2022. While Russia is not a member of the ICC, Mexico is, which adds a layer of complexity to the invitation extended to Putin.

The relationship between Mexico and Russia has been evolving, with Russian President Putin congratulating Claudia Sheinbaum on her electoral victory in June. In his message, Putin referred to Mexico as Russia’s “historically friendly partner in Latin America,” indicating a strengthening of ties between the two nations.

This developing relationship was further evidenced in September 2023, when a Russian military unit participated in Mexico’s Independence Day parade. This participation drew criticism from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who expressed concern over providing a platform for forces involved in the invasion of Ukraine. Despite this controversy, the Mexican government appears committed to maintaining its diplomatic engagement with Russia.

The invitation to Putin raises questions about the potential impact on Mexico’s international standing, given the ongoing tensions surrounding Russia’s actions in Ukraine. It also highlights the delicate balancing act Mexico faces as it navigates its relationships with global powers amid complex geopolitical dynamics.
