Mexico City — A Mexico City taxi driver has been commended for his integrity after returning 100,000 pesos in cash left behind by a passenger in his vehicle. The incident, which occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 14, underscores the driver’s honesty and sense of responsibility.
The situation came to light when the North Command and Control Center (C2) alerted local authorities after receiving a request for citizen assistance, which had been activated via a panic button. Responding promptly, officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) were dispatched to the scene at Sur 101 Street, near the intersection with Felipe Ángeles in the Barrio San Miguel neighborhood, located within the Iztacalco borough.
Incident Details
According to the police report, the taxi driver, a 38-year-old man, had picked up a passenger, estimated to be around 60 years old, earlier that morning. The passenger had boarded the taxi at the intersection of Apatlaco and Melchor Ocampo, requesting to be taken to the South Bus Station (Central de Autobuses del Sur) in Coyoacán.
Upon reaching the bus station, the passenger disembarked, taking his belongings with him—except for a black backpack that he inadvertently left on the back seat of the taxi. After realizing the oversight, the taxi driver checked the contents of the backpack and discovered socks along with approximately 100,000 pesos in cash, comprising bills of various denominations.
Commendable Actions
Understanding the significance of the lost money, the taxi driver immediately sought the assistance of SSC officers. He reported the find and accompanied the officers to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, where the necessary procedures were initiated to ensure the safe return of the money to its rightful owner.
The SSC officers, who also photographed the scene as part of their documentation process, have praised the taxi driver for his quick thinking and ethical conduct. The authorities have since launched an investigation to verify the origin of the money and to identify and locate the owner.
