Mexican Navy-Led Raid in Michoacán Kills 12, Arrests Nine in Anti-Cartel Operation

In Huitzontla, Michoacán, security forces killed 12 alleged cartel members and detained nine during a Navy-led raid, seizing weapons and tactical gear.

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Navy-led security forces carried out a raid on a suspected gang site in Huitzontla, Michoacán, killing 12 alleged criminal operatives and detaining nine others, the Security Ministry said.

Security Minister Omar García Harfuch confirmed that three members of the Navy were injured during the clash and are receiving treatment in a regional military hospital.

Personnel discovered and secured high-caliber firearms, tactical vests and other equipment at the rural compound.

Among those arrested were Mexican nationals and former Colombian military members, all accused of involvement in homicide, extortion and kidnapping.

The ministry said the targeted group is linked to maritime drug trafficking along Mexico’s Pacific coast, and that suspects opened fire on approaching naval units, necessitating the use of force in compliance with regulations.

Local press identified the cell as part of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government in February 2025.

This operation is part of a broader government crackdown on organized crime that has resulted in more than 17,000 arrests and the seizure of over 140 tonnes of narcotics during the first six months of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.

The Security Ministry said federal forces will sustain operations against maritime trafficking cells across Michoacán to curb the flow of drugs and weapons.
