Zapopan, Jalisco — A massive sinkhole, approximately 10 meters in diameter, has emerged at the intersection of López Mateos Avenue and Anillo Periférico in the El Mante neighborhood, causing significant disruptions to traffic and raising safety concerns. The municipal government of Zapopan reported the incident early this morning, prompting immediate action from various government agencies.
Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramírez addressed the situation, stating, “The team from the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP), the Intermunicipal System of Drinking Water and Sewerage Services (Siapa) of Guadalajara, the government of Zapopan, and the Jalisco Traffic Police are already at the site carrying out the corresponding inspections.”
The governor further explained, “At this moment, an assessment is being made to determine the possible causes of this sinkhole, but at the same time we are planning the intervention to reopen the avenue to traffic as soon as possible and affect the public as little as possible.”
The emergence of the sinkhole has led to a preventive closure of both central and lateral lanes on López Mateos Avenue at the intersection with Periférico. The State Traffic Police Department has issued a warning to drivers, advising them to seek alternative routes to avoid congestion and ensure safety.
As authorities arrived at the scene, they began conducting thorough inspections to understand the underlying causes of the sinkhole. Initial reports suggest that infrastructure issues, possibly related to the underground sewerage and water systems, could be a contributing factor. The SIOP and Siapa teams are closely examining the site to identify any structural weaknesses and assess the extent of the damage.
In light of the sinkhole, traffic management has become a top priority to minimize disruptions. The Jalisco Traffic Police are actively managing the flow of vehicles, directing them away from the affected area. Commuters are urged to follow official updates and advisories to avoid the intersection and use alternative routes.
Public safety remains a primary concern. Authorities have cordoned off the area around the sinkhole to prevent any accidents. Residents and businesses in the vicinity have been notified, and measures are being taken to ensure their safety during the ongoing inspections and repairs.
Governor Alfaro Ramírez emphasized the need for swift action to restore normalcy. “We are committed to addressing this issue promptly. Our teams are working around the clock to evaluate the situation and implement necessary repairs,” he stated. The intervention plan includes stabilizing the ground, repairing any damaged infrastructure, and ensuring the area is safe for traffic and pedestrians.
The municipal government of Zapopan and state authorities are collaborating to allocate resources and expertise for the repair work. Engineers and technicians are on-site, developing a comprehensive plan to fix the sinkhole and prevent future occurrences.
The sinkhole has caused inconvenience to local residents and businesses, disrupting daily routines and operations. The government has assured the public that every effort is being made to expedite the repairs and reopen the affected roads. Temporary measures, such as traffic redirections and additional public transportation options, are being considered to ease the burden on commuters.
