Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City Named North America’s Best Bar for Second Consecutive Year

Handshake Speakeasy, located in Mexico City’s Colonia Juárez, has been awarded the title of North America’s Best Bar for the second consecutive year by North America’s 50 Best Bars, sponsored by Perrier. The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Vancouver on April 29, 2025.

The bar, known for its intimate 32-seat setting and 1920s-inspired décor, offers guests a unique cocktail experience. Under the guidance of bar director Eric van Beek, Handshake Speakeasy has gained acclaim for its innovative drinks that blend Mexican ingredients with modern mixology techniques. Signature cocktails like “Once Upon a Time in Oaxaca” and “Mexi-Thai” showcase the bar’s creative approach.

In addition to its main bar, Handshake Speakeasy has expanded to include a Japanese-style izakaya in the basement of the NH Hotel, featuring high-tech elements such as a chilled bar surface to keep drinks cold. This expansion allows the bar to accommodate more guests while maintaining its commitment to quality and innovation.

The recognition of Handshake Speakeasy highlights Mexico City’s growing prominence in the global cocktail scene. Other Mexican bars featured in the top 50 include Tlecān (No. 3), Licorería Limantour (No. 9), and El Gallo Altanero in Guadalajara (No. 8), reflecting the country’s rich mixology culture.

For those interested in experiencing Handshake Speakeasy, reservations are recommended due to its limited seating and high demand. The bar continues to set the standard for excellence in the North American bar industry.
