Delta Airlines has announced the launch of a new direct flight route from Detroit to Tulum International Airport “Felipe Carrillo Puerto,” scheduled to begin on January 11, 2025. This strategic initiative aims to enhance connectivity and foster social well-being in the central and southern regions of Quintana Roo.
The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur) emphasized that this new connection will further solidify Quintana Roo’s position as a top destination for international tourists. The route will offer 10 weekly flights, providing direct access to Tulum and enabling travelers to experience its renowned beaches and rich Mayan heritage with greater ease.
In light of this development, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, head of Sedetur, expressed that Delta’s new service underscores its commitment to the Mexican Caribbean and its pivotal role in boosting international tourism. “The new route represents a valuable opportunity to promote our destination and offer our visitors an unforgettable experience,” Cueto Riestra stated.
This announcement comes shortly after Avianca revealed plans to establish a new flight route between Bogotá and Tulum, signaling a growing interest in the region as a key travel hub.
According to data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), Tulum International Airport has swiftly captured 0.5% of the international air travel market, surpassing Felipe Ángeles International Airport in its market share. Between January and June 2024, Tulum welcomed approximately half a million passengers, both domestic and international, and facilitated 4,330 air operations.
Currently, Tulum International Airport offers nine routes from the United States, two from Canada, and one from Panama. By the end of 2024, the airport is expected to expand its connectivity further with a new European route through Lufthansa.
This expansion in air travel routes highlights the growing demand for Tulum as a premier travel destination, not only for its picturesque landscapes and cultural attractions but also for its increasing accessibility for international visitors. The new Delta Airlines route is poised to contribute significantly to the region’s tourism growth and economic development.
