Milton Morales Figueroa, head of the Special Operations Unit of the Mexico City Police, was tragically murdered on Sunday in Coacalco, State of Mexico, after reportedly being followed for several days by a criminal cell. This startling revelation was confirmed by authorities in the capital, who are actively collaborating in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have detected that Morales Figueroa was under surveillance by unidentified individuals, though the duration of this surveillance remains unclear. Currently, all lines of investigation are open as officials work diligently to piece together the circumstances leading to this heinous crime. A critical aspect of the investigation is understanding why Morales Figueroa was without bodyguards at the time of the attack. Despite being off duty, the official was typically assigned a group of people for his protection. However, a video circulating on social media shows the absence of his escort during the attack, raising significant questions.
The video footage reveals a lone assailant approaching Morales Figueroa from behind and fatally shooting him in the head, leading to his immediate death. This brazen attack occurred while Morales Figueroa was in front of a chicken shop in the center of Coacalco.
Morales Figueroa was a respected figure in law enforcement, closely associated with Omar García Harfuch, whom he was expected to collaborate with once García Harfuch assumed the role of Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of the federal government. Morales Figueroa, originally from Aguascalientes and 40 years old, had a distinguished career, having served in the now-defunct Federal Police, the FGR, and the prosecutor’s office and police of Mexico City.
His notable contributions include his pivotal role in investigating the attacks against Omar García Harfuch in June 2020 and journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva in 2022. He also played a crucial part in the operations leading to the largest cocaine seizure in Mexico City and secured the first arrest warrant under the Olimpia Law.
The assassination of Morales Figueroa has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community. On the day following his death, family, friends, officers, and colleagues gathered to bid their final farewells, holding a mass in his honor. Police officers, led by Pablo Vázquez, the head of the police force, stood in a solemn guard of honor around the coffin.
During the farewell, Vázquez Camacho expressed his condolences to Morales Figueroa’s family and vowed that justice would be served. He assured that federal authorities, along with those from Mexico City and the State of Mexico, are fully committed to solving this case. Vázquez Camacho lauded Morales Figueroa’s dedication, professionalism, commitment, extraordinary work, and discipline, emphasizing that his legacy would be cherished by all police officers in the capital.
The funeral proceedings concluded with a poignant gesture as red rose petals were gently scattered over the coffin, which was then transported to a funeral home in the State of Mexico. Here, family and friends would gather to hold a wake, reflecting on the life and contributions of a man who devoted his career to protecting the citizens of Mexico.
The investigation into this tragic event continues, with authorities pledging to leave no stone unturned in their quest for justice for Milton Morales Figueroa.
