San Miguel de Allende has once again claimed the title of Mexico’s premier wedding destination, as announced this week at Tianguis Turístico México 2025. In its 49th edition—held April 28 through May 1 across Rosarito, Tijuana and San Diego—México Unknown magazine honored the colonial city for the second consecutive year, highlighting its well-preserved architecture, vibrant culinary scene and rich artisan-craft traditions.
Nestled in Mexico’s Bajío region, San Miguel de Allende has long drawn couples seeking a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. México Unknown praised the city’s baroque churches and cobblestone streets for providing a romantic setting that photographers and guests alike cherish. The city’s burgeoning food scene—from family-run fondas serving traditional pozole to upscale fusion restaurants—was cited as a key factor in its appeal, offering diverse menus that cater to both local flavors and international palates.
Artisan workshops and markets also bolster San Miguel’s reputation. Visitors can commission hand-painted papel picado, bespoke wedding invitations crafted from locally sourced cotton paper, and intricate silver jewelry from the nearby towns of San Antonio and Dolores Hidalgo. These handcrafted elements allow couples to infuse personalized details into their celebrations, reflecting the region’s centuries-old artistic heritage.
Tourism data reflect the city’s growing wedding economy. Local hoteliers report that wedding bookings account for nearly 30 percent of room nights between October and March, a period traditionally considered Mexico’s high season for weddings. Restaurateurs and event planners say demand has surged for open-air venues—such as rooftop terraces overlooking the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel—and for traditional mariachi performances that add an authentic touch to receptions.
City officials view the recognition as both an economic boon and an opportunity to promote sustainable tourism. “We’re honored to be named the best city to host weddings in Mexico,” said a spokesperson for the municipal tourism office. “Our goal is to ensure that growth benefits the local community while preserving the unique character that makes San Miguel de Allende so special.”
As wedding tourism continues to thrive, local entrepreneurs are expanding offerings to include pre-wedding cultural tours, artisanal cooking classes and mezcal-tasting experiences—ensuring that couples and their guests discover all facets of the city’s living heritage.
