The final stop of the 2024-25 Mexican Professional Golf Tour tees off May 14–17 at Ventanas de San Miguel, featuring 36 elite players competing for a ₱3 million-peso purse.
San Miguel de Allende is abuzz this week as the season-ending Tour Championship of the Mexican Professional Golf Tour (MPGT) gets underway at the Ventanas de San Miguel Golf & Resort. From May 14 to 17, Mexico’s only OWGR-sanctioned circuit will crown its 2024-25 champion among a field of the top 36 players. The purse of 3 million pesos—including a generous 1 million to the winner—has drawn marquee names from across the country and seven teams of international contenders.
Over four rounds with no cut, participants will tackle the Nick Faldo–designed, par-70 layout measuring 7,191 yards. The course, celebrating its sixteenth anniversary, offers a demanding mix of risk-reward holes, strategically placed bunkers, and undulating greens. Local organizers expect daily galleries to line the fairways as golfers vie not only for the title but also for coveted world ranking points.
Leading the home contingent is Guanajuato native Luis Gerardo Garza, fresh off victories at Club de Golf Chapultepec and Club Campestre de Puebla this season. Garza enters with high hopes and an intimate knowledge of Ventanas’s many subtleties. “It’s been a season of tremendous learning. Winning the Tour Championship would be a dream, but beyond the outcome, I’m enjoying every challenge this course presents,” he reflected moments before his opening tee shot.
Sharing the spotlight is José de Jesús “Camarón” Rodríguez, the MPGT’s all-time leader with 11 career titles and the recent champion of the Campanario Classic in Querétaro. Rodríguez emphasized his affinity for Ventanas’s layout and the enthusiastic local support. “Being back at Ventanas de San Miguel feels like coming home. It’s a fantastic course in a fantastic city, and I’m here to compete with great expectations,” he said.
The field also includes Mexico City veteran Roberto Lebrija, an Asian Tour regular, alongside 13 international players from Brazil, Canada, the United States, and beyond. Defending champion Alexandre Rocha of Brazil returns to defend his title, joined by compatriot Rafael Becker. Canada’s Sebastian Szirmak and U.S. winner Joel Thelen—victor in Monterrey and Mérida stages—promise to raise the level of play even further. “Coming back as defending champion is special. Last year was unforgettable, and with this year’s depth of talent, patience and smart shot-making will be key,” said Rocha.
Beyond season honors, the Tour Championship will also determine the MPGT’s Player of the Year for 2024-25. That accolade recognizes consistent excellence across all ten seasonal events, adding extra incentive for those vying to cap their campaign with both the trophy and year-end distinction.
Round one began this morning at 11:30 AM local time, with second-round action at 3:30 PM. Third and fourth rounds follow today through Saturday, concluding just in time for Sunday’s awards ceremony. Golf enthusiasts and local visitors alike are encouraged to attend; admission for spectators is free, and on-site amenities include food stalls, a merch tent, and junior clinics run by MPGT professionals. The city’s historic downtown is also staging a complementary golf expo through Friday, featuring swing-analysis booths and appearances by top players.
As the sun sets over the orange-stone rooftops of San Miguel de Allende, the Tour Championship promises not only a thrilling conclusion to Mexico’s professional golf season but also a showcase of sporting excellence against the backdrop of one of the country’s most iconic cultural destinations.
